Patch, Lt-General Alexander McC.

Patch, Lt-General Alexander McC. (1889–1945),US Army commander of the Americal Division assigned to defend New Caledonia, before taking command of American ground forces on Guadalcanal in December 1942. He was promoted lt-general in August 1944, and as commander of the Seventh US Army commanded the French Riviera landings that month. Later, when his Seventh Army was part of Devers' Sixth Army Group, it helped eliminate the Colmar pocket, before taking part in the Rhine crossings at Worms, capturing Nuremberg and then Munich. He died of pneumonia in November 1945.
