Orpo, or Ordnungspolizei (order police), was the domestic uniformed police in Nazi Germany. During the war it spread to occupied countries and it became more military in character. Armed formations were raised from its personnel and these worked closely with the SS in the suppression of resistance groups in eastern Europe, the Balkans, and, after Italy's surrender in September 1943, in northern Italy.
