Okulicki, Maj-General Leopold

Okulicki, Maj-General Leopold (1898–1946?),Polish Army officer who headed the Union for Armed Struggle (Związek Walki Zbrojnej, or ZWZ), the precursor of the Polish Home Army (see Poland, 4) in eastern Poland when, under the Nazi–Soviet Pact, it was occupied by the USSR in September 1939. Captured in January 1941 he was imprisoned in Moscow, but was later released and served as chief of staff in Anders Army. In September 1943 he joined the Polish Home Army which, as a maj-general, he led from October 1943. In 1945 he was sentenced by the Soviet authorities to ten years' imprisonment, allegedly for conducting activities hostile to the Red Army, and he probably died, or was executed, the following year.
