O'Connor, Lt-General Sir Richard

O'Connor, Lt-General Sir Richard (1889–1981),British Army officer who commanded the Western Desert Force which defeated Italian forces during the early Western Desert campaigns. He was captured in March 1941, but escaped in September 1943 and commanded 8th Corps during the Normandy campaign. But ‘the experience of capture and imprisonment…had taken its toll, and O'Connor was often only a ghost of his former self ’ ( N. Hamilton, Monty: The Field Marshal, 1944–1976, London, 1986, p. 98). In December 1944 he was posted to India and promoted general in April 1945. He was knighted in 1941.
