Normandie Squadron, Free French fighter squadron which, from March 1943, served with the Soviet Army Air Force during the German–Soviet war. After distinguishing itself in the fighting to clear Lithuania of Germans and in the crossing of the River Niemen it became known as the Normandie-Niemen Regiment. In Soviet aircraft (Yak-9 and then Yak-3) serviced by Soviet technical personnel, it flew more than 5,000 sorties, shooting down 273 German aircraft. The unit was highly decorated and four of its pilots were made Heroes of the Soviet Union (see decorations).
