Noguès, General Auguste

Noguès, General Auguste (1876–1971),C-in-C French forces in North Africa in September 1939 who became so notorious for changing sides during the course of the war that he was nicknamed General ‘No-yes’. He became the Vichy French resident-general of French Morocco and broke the terms of the Franco-German armistice by keeping his irregular mountain forces, the Goums, fully armed and trained. His troops and naval forces resisted the US landings in French Morocco at the start of the North African campaign in November 1942, but he then agreed to serve the Allies. In June 1943 de Gaulle forced his resignation and he retired to Portugal. In 1947 he was sentenced in absentia to 20 years' imprisonment for collaboration and was arrested in 1956 when he returned to France, but was then released.
