Nauru and Ocean Islands

Nauru and Ocean Islands, situated about halfway between the Marshall and the Solomons groups of Pacific islands. In 1939 Nauru was a British mandate administered by Australia. Ocean Island, situated about 240 km. (150 mi.) east of Nauru, was a British possession administratively part of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands. They had valuable phosphate deposits, a million tons being shipped from Nauru in the year ending June 1940 and half that coming from Ocean. In December 1940 German auxiliary cruisers sank three phosphate ships and shelled the islands' installations. The Japanese occupied them in August 1942 and about 1,200 islanders were deported to Truk as forced labour. See also Pacific war.
