Murphy, Robert

Murphy, Robert (1894–1978),US career diplomat who was counsellor in Paris when it was occupied by the Germans in June 1940 and became chargé d'affaires when the Vichy French government was formed. In 1941 he became the US representative in French North Africa with the rank of minister. He signed an economic agreement there with Weygand and helped the Allied landings at the start of the North African campaign in November 1942 by establishing contact with the intelligence network Agency Africa, accompanied Maj-General Mark Clark during his secret negotiations with the French military authorities before them. He then acted as Eisenhower's political adviser during the campaign before being attached to the Allied Military government of Occupied Territories in Italy. He ended the war as SHAEF's political adviser on German affairs.
