Moscow trials

Moscow trials. By the spring of 1945 Poland was occupied by the Red Army. Although the Polish government had formally disbanded the underground Home Army (see Poland, 4) on 8 February, large numbers of its former soldiers were still being arrested by the communists. On 27 March sixteen leaders of the Polish underground, wishing to clarify the situation, responded to an invitation to talks at Red Army HQ near Warsaw, and they were later flown to Moscow, ostensibly to meet Marshal Zhukov. Only on 4 May did the Soviet government reveal to the world that the sixteen had been arrested for ‘anti Soviet activities’ and collaboration with the Germans. Their show trial took place in Moscow from 18 to 21 June 1945. Most, including General Okulicki, were found guilty and sentenced to varying terms in jail.
