Middle East Commando

Middle East Commando, formed in October 1941 from L Detachment (see Special Air Service), the remnants of Layforce (No.3 Troop) and No. 51 Middle East Commando, and the Special Boat Section. It was short-lived and was disbanded when Churchill agreed in August 1942 that all special operations should come under the Special Air Service. Its only operation of note was when, in December 1941, Lt-Colonel Geoffrey Keyes, the son of Admiral Keyes, led No. 3 Troop (which also called itself No. 11 Commando) in a raid on what was incorrectly thought to be Rommel's living quarters. Keyes was killed and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross (see decorations).
