Mersa Matruh, battle of. This was fought during the Western Desert campaigns after Tobruk had been captured by Rommel's forces on 21 June 1942 and the remnants of the British and Commonwealth Eighth Army, commanded by Lt-General Neil Ritchie, had retreated to this Egyptian port. On 25 June the C-in-C Middle East, Auchinleck, dismissed Ritchie and took command himself. Rommel's attack the next day, and poor communications and confused orders left the New Zealand Division isolated and 10th Corps surrounded. The New Zealanders, in one of the epic actions in the desert war, broke out at the point of the bayonet and 10th Corps, amidst confused fighting, eventually managed to break out, too. Rommel occupied the port on 27 June while the Eighth Army withdrew once more, this time to El Alamein.
