Mein Kampf (‘My Struggle’) was Hitler's autobiography-cum-political manifesto. He began dictating the first volume to
Hess when they were both imprisoned after the Munich putsch of November 1923 and it was published in the summer of 1925. A second volume, published in December 1926, was later added to the first volume to become, from 1930, the standard edition. Up to 1930 23,000 copies of the first volume were sold and 13,000 copies of the second. By the end of 1933 the combined volume had sold 1.5 million copies and probably as many as ten million were sold in Hitler's lifetime. Its style is turgid and convoluted, and Hitler later tried to distance himself from it, though he affirmed that ‘as to the substance, there is nothing I would want to change.’ See also
