Mars Task Force

Mars Task Force, officially designated 5332 Brigade (Provisional), this 3,000-strong US Army unit was a long-range penetration group which fought during the Burma campaign (see Chindits). Activated in India in July 1944 it was commanded by Brigadier- General Thomas Arms and comprised 612th (US) Field Artillery battalion, 124th (US) Cavalry Regiment, 1st Chinese Regiment, and 475th (US) Regiment, the last containing surviving personnel from Merrill's Marauders (see GALAHAD). It took part in Lt-General Sultan's Northern Combat Area Command offensive, originally launched by Stilwell from northern Burma in October 1943, one of its principal objectives being to clear the Japanese-held Burma Road. When this was accomplished, in February 1945, Mars Task Force was withdrawn to China.
