Mariana Islands, group of fifteen Pacific islands that stretch in a curve for 800 km. (500 mi.) half way between Japan and the island of New Guinea. The four biggest islands are
Saipan,
Tinian, Rota, and
Guam. Guam was ceded to the USA by Spain in 1898. The others were purchased by Germany and during the
First World War they were captured by Japan to whom the
League of Nations mandated them after 1918. Guam was occupied by the Japanese two days after
Pearl Harbor and Saipan became an important administrative centre for them during the
Pacific war. Operation FORAGER was launched by US forces in February 1944 to capture the whole group, the last, Guam, falling that August. The most northerly of the main islands, Saipan, was 1,930 km. (1,200 mi.) from Tokyo and the islands became the main US base for mounting the
strategic air offensive against Japan.
