Manteuffel, General Hasso-Eccard von

Manteuffel, General Hasso-Eccard von (1897–1978),German panzer general who rose from lt-colonel in 1939 to command of a division during the North African campaign and then of 7th Panzer Division and the Grossdeutschland Panzer Grenadier division, in the German–Soviet war. He was promoted lt-general in September 1944 and given command of the Fifth Panzer Army which played a crucial role in the Ardennes campaign that December. From March 1945 he commanded the Third Panzer Army. This was part of Army Group Vistula which tried to stem the Soviet advance and prevent the fall of Berlin. By retreating at speed he managed to surrender to the Americans and not to the Red Army on 3 May 1945.
