Makin Island raid

Makin Island raid, mounted in August 1942 by a US Special force, Carlson's Raiders, against the Japanese garrison on this Pacific atoll, the most northerly of the Gilbert Islands. Intended to distract the Japanese from the landings then taking place on Guadalcanal, it involved transporting 222 men 3,200 km. (2,000 mi.) by submarine. At the time the raid seemed successful, but it prompted the Japanese to reinforce and fortify a nearby atoll called Tarawa, which cost the US Marine Corps heavy losses in November 1943.
