Lorraine Squadron, formed in August 1941 from Blenheim bombers of the first Free French air unit, Groupe de Bombardement No.1, which took part in the
Fezzan campaigns. The three surviving Blenheims of this campaign supported ground troops in the
East African campaign before moving to Damascus where they merged with another Free French wing. Together these became officially known as the Lorraine Squadron, one wing being called ‘Metz’ the other ‘Nancy’. The squadron moved to Libya in November 1941 and in 56 days flew 388 missions supporting Allied troops fighting in the
Western Desert campaigns. One-third of the air crews were killed in these operations. When the squadron was withdrawn the Metz Wing started ferrying duties on the
Takoradi air route while the Nancy Wing was stationed in Palestine for coastal patrols. In December 1942 the squadron went to the UK and was equipped with Boston bombers and later with Mitchell bombers. It became part of the RAF as 342 Squadron and flew low-level missions against targets in the Low Countries and France, supported Allied ground troops during the
Normandy campaign, and undertook raids over Germany. Its casualties included 800 killed.
