Léopold III (1901–83),King of the Belgians between 1934 and 1951 who personally commanded his army when the Germans invaded his country in May 1940 (see FALL GELB). Against the wishes of his cabinet, he surrendered unconditionally to the Germans on 28 May 1940 and then declared himself a prisoner-of-war (he was in fact interned in the palace of Laeken). He was much reviled because of this, and because he refused to leave Belgium with his ministers, who later formed a government-in-exile in London. But he twice travelled to Germany to confront Hitler about improving his people's lot and on 7 June 1944 was deported with his family to Germany. He lived in Switzerland until July 1950, returning only after three-fifths of his people had voted for him to do so. But the socialist government then in power resigned in protest and rioting followed, and the following July he abdicated in favour of his son, Baudouin. See also Belgium, 2.
