Litvinov, Maxim

Litvinov, Maxim (1876–1952),Soviet commissar for foreign affairs from 1930 to 1939 who helped win his country's admittance to the League of Nations in 1934 and represented it there from 1934 to 1938. He was a Jew married to an Englishwoman, and fiercely anti-Nazi. He was replaced by Molotov in May 1939. In December 1941 he was appointed the USSR's ambassador in Washington, a post he retained until becoming Soviet vice-minister of foreign affairs in 1943.
