Löhr, General Alexander

Löhr, General Alexander (1885–1947),the only Luftwaffe officer besides Kesselring to become a theatre commander, Löhr was C-in-C of the Austrian Air Force at the time of Germany's annexation of Austria in March 1938. He led the Fourth Air Fleet during the Polish and Balkan campaigns and commanded both Fourth Air Fleet and Student's airborne forces during the capture of Crete in May 1941. His Fourth Air Fleet then took part in the German invasion of the USSR in June 1941 (see BARBAROSSA) when, supporting Rundstedt's Army Group South, it contributed substantially to German successes at Smolensk that August. In July 1942 he was appointed C-in-C South-East, and in January 1943 took command of Army Group E in Greece and the Aegean Sea which inflicted reverses on British forces during the Dodecanese campaign later that year.

Löhr's forces committed atrocities on the civilian population during their withdrawal from Yugoslavia in September 1944, and in 1947 he was hanged in Yugoslavia for these war crimes.
