Layforce

Layforce. British Commando force commanded by Lt-Colonel Robert Laycock which comprised Nos. 7, 8, and 11 (Scottish) Commandos, Nos. 50 and 52 Middle East Commandos, and the Special Boat Section. It was formed in the Middle East in February 1941. For security reasons 7, 8, and 11 were renamed A, B, and C Battalions, and 50 and 52 became D Battalion. A and D Battalions were captured in Crete; four troops of B joined the Tobruk garrison; and C fought in the Syrian campaign. Layforce was disbanded in August 1941 and its remnants became No. 3 Troop of the newly formed Middle East Commando under Laycock.
