Kurita Takeo, Vice-Admiral

Kurita Takeo, Vice-Admiral (1889–1977),Japanese naval officer, a torpedo specialist, best described as a sea dog as he spent much of his career afloat. As a rear-admiral he commanded 7th Cruiser Squadron which helped cover the Japanese invasion force for Malaya and Thailand in December 1941 (see Malayan campaign). He subsequently took part in the conquest of the Netherlands East Indies and commanded the Close Support Force during the Midway battle in June 1942. Before the Leyte Gulf battle in October 1944, during which he led the First Striking Force, he had his flagship sunk under him and was then forced by a shortage of fuel to disengage from the much weaker US force screening the US landings just when victory seemed assured.
