Kondō Nobutake, Admiral

Kondō Nobutake, Admiral (1886–1953),pro-German Japanese naval officer who served as vice-chief of the Naval Staff from October 1939 to October 1941. As C-in-C of the Combined Fleet's administrative Second Fleet, he commanded Southern Force which exercised control over all naval, naval air, and amphibious warfare operations during the Japanese attacks on Malaya, the Philippines, and the Netherlands East Indies. He also oversaw the Indian Ocean raid in April 1942 and his warships participated in the attempt to take Midway in June 1942, in many of the night actions off Guadalcanal, and in the Leyte Gulf battle in October 1944. A gunnery specialist and an able staff officer, his excessive caution prevented him from being a successful fighting admiral.
