Kokoda trail

Kokoda trail, 1,610 km. (100 mi.) jungle track over Papua's precipitous Owen Stanley mountains, 4,000 m. (13,000 ft.) high, which divide the southern coast—where Papua's capital, Port Moresby, is situated—from the north. It was named after a hill station at its northern end from where a track led to Buna on the northern coastline. Marked on Japanese and Australian maps as a passable route, which it was not, it was fought over by Australian and Japanese troops during the New Guinea campaign.
