Knox, (William) Franklin

Knox, (William) Franklin (1874–1944),proprietor of the Chicago Daily News, and a formidable opponent of Roosevelt's New Deal, who was Republican candidate for the US vice-presidency in 1936. Nevertheless, after the fall of France in June 1940, when Roosevelt broadened his administration, he appointed Knox secretary of the navy. Attacked by fellow Republicans for accepting the post, Knox said he was an American first and a Republican afterwards. Never afraid to speak out—in October 1941 he said ‘we shall lock Nazi Germany up in an iron ring and within that ring of sea power she shall perish’—he was a strong advocate of the two-ocean navy which he did so much to foster, and he reorganized the US Marine Corps to shape them into the potent wagers of amphibious warfare which they became in the Pacific war. According to the official US Navy historian, he was one of the best secretaries the navy ever had.
