Ilsley, James

Ilsley, James (1894–1967),Canadian Liberal politician who served in Mackenzie King's wartime cabinet, initially as minister of national revenue and then as minister of finance. His expertise in economics, which gained him tremendous prestige during the war years, enabled the Canadian government, through Canadian Mutual Aid, to offer financial help to several Allied countries, particularly the UK. He was not close to the prime minister, but King noted that he was ‘absolutely indispensable, not only to Canada but to the war effort of the United Nations.’ ( J. Pickersgill and D. Forster, The Mackenzie King Record, vol. 1: 1939–1944, Toronto, Ontario, 1960, p. 650). See also Canada, 3.
