Huntziger, General Charles (1880–1941),French Army officer who commanded the Second French Army during the fighting which led to the
fall of France in June 1940.
De Gaulle thought him brilliant and wanted him to become the Allied C-in-C instead of
Weygand when
Reynaud replaced
Gamelin on 20 May. He led the French delegation at the
armistice negotiations with the Germans and in September 1940
Pétain made him minister of war, and then C-in-C of
Vichy ground forces. He was killed in an air crash.
