Hitler Line

Hitler Line, German defensive line held during the Italian campaign. Hitler ordered its construction in November 1943 as a fall-back, or switch, line for the Bernhardt Line, and to defend the Liri valley. It ran from Terracina on the west coast of Italy, to Fondi, through the Aurunci mountains, to Pontecorvo, Piedimonte, and Monte Cairo. In January 1944 its name was changed to the Senger Line when the Allies appeared to be threatening its safety and, thereby, Hitler's prestige. With the Bernhardt and Gustav Lines it was known to the Allies as the Winter Line.
