Gestapo, acronym derived from Geheime Staatspolizei (State Secret Police), the organization with which
Göring replaced the Prussian political police in 1933. In 1936 it became a branch of
Heydrich's security police (see
Sipo), which re mained within the ministry of the interior, but in September 1939, when the
RSHA (Reichssicherheitshauptamt) was formed as a main office of the
SS, it became its department (
Amt) IV.
