George VI (1895–1952),British king who inherited the throne after his elder brother Edward VIII (see
Windsor) abdicated in 1936. A shy man who had to wrestle with a bad stammer, he and his family became a symbol to the British public of the struggle for freedom. He worked tirelessly to boost the morale of the armed forces and civilians alike and refused to allow either himself or his family to be evacuated at the height of the invasion scare in 1940. He suffered a personal tragedy when his youngest brother, the Duke of Kent, a 39-year-old RAF officer, was killed in an air crash on 25 August 1942.
