Garby-Czerniawski, Wing-Commander Roman

Garby-Czerniawski, Wing-Commander Roman (1910–85),Polish Air Force pilot who headed the Franco-Polish interallié resistance network which was betrayed to the Germans by Mathilde Carré in November 1941. To save other interallié members from execution he agreed to become an Abwehr agent in the UK. He was allowed to escape to Spain, and from there he made his way to the UK where he became a triple agent (codenamed BRUTUS) by working for the XX-committee. He helped pass vital deception plans which contributed towards the success of the Normandy landings in June 1944 (see OVERLORD), but he ceased being used by the XX-committee in January 1945 when the trial of Carré in France threatened to compromise him.
