GOLD, codename for assault beach in British sector on which the British 50th Infantry Division disembarked at the start of the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944 (see
OVERLORD). By the end of that day 24,970 troops had landed there. It lay between Port en Bessin and the River Provence east of Mt Fleury in the Baie de la Seine. One of the two artificial harbours (see
MULBERRIES) was installed there, at Arromanches.
