Fraser, Admiral Sir Bruce

Fraser, Admiral Sir Bruce (1888–1981),British naval officer who served as Third Sea Lord from 1939 to 1942. He then became second-in-command of the Home Fleet and succeeded Tovey as its C-in-C the following year. When illness forced Pound to resign as First Sea Lord in September 1943, Churchill offered Fraser the post. Fraser replied that he would, of course, serve wherever he was sent, but that while ‘I believe I have the confidence of my own fleet, Cunningham has that of the whole navy’. Churchill agreed and Cunningham was appointed. However, Fraser soon received the recognition he deserved when, in December 1943, he sank the German battle-cruiser Scharnhorst off North Cape; from this battle he later took the title Lord Fraser of North Cape. In November 1944 he was appointed C-in-C of the new British Pacific Fleet (see Task Force 57) and eventually served as First Sea Lord between 1948 and 1951. He was knighted in 1941.
