Franco y Bahamonde, General Francisco

Franco y Bahamonde, General Francisco (1892–1975),Fascist Caudillo (leader) of Spain who, despite having received extensive German aid in the Spanish Civil War (1936–9), refused to join the Axis and would not permit the passage of German troops through Spain to attack Gibraltar. He was a deft negotiator— Hitler remarked after a protracted encounter with him in October 1940 that he would prefer to have three or four teeth extracted than suffer another meeting with him—and managed to keep the exhausted Spain neutral. His principal fighting contribution to the Axis cause was to allow volunteer army and air units to fight on the Eastern Front (see Blue Division and Spanish Legion).
