Foulkes, Lt-General Charles

Foulkes, Lt-General Charles (1903–68),English-born but Canadian educated Canadian Army officer who rose from being brigade major with the 1st Canadian Division in September 1939 to commanding the 2nd Canadian Division during the Normandy campaign. From November 1944 he commanded the 1st Canadian Corps in the Italian campaign and then in north-west Europe where he accepted the surrender of German forces in the Netherlands. In May 1945 he returned to Canada as the Canadian Army's Chief of General Staff. See also Canada, 6(a and b).
