Forschungsstelle

Forschungsstelle (research post). This German intelligence unit, situated in the Netherlands and, from the autumn of 1944, in Bavaria, was able to intercept and unscramble transatlantic telephone conversations. Many of them were routine calls between minor officials but it also intercepted the conversations of Halifax, Harriman, Eden, Hopkins, and those between Churchill and Roosevelt. Nothing of real substance seems to have been gleaned by the unit from any of these conversations, presumably since those involved supposed that the line might be insecure.
