Force H was a powerful British naval squadron, really a small fleet, formed at Gibraltar on 28 June 1940. Initially it was commanded by Admiral Somerville (later by Rear- Admiral E. N. Syfret and then Vice-Admiral Algernon Willis). Though it had its base at Gibraltar it was an independent operational command, which was soon to cause confusion (see North, Admiral). It was created to fill the vacuum left by the French fleet after the fall of France and to ensure that that fleet did not fall into German hands (see alsoFrench Fleet, scuttling of). It was involved in the hunt for the Bismarck and in the Madagascar landings, and took part in nearly every naval action and amphibious warfare landing during the battle for the Mediterranean before being disbanded in October 1943.
