Falkenhausen, General Alexander von

Falkenhausen, General Alexander von (1878–1966),German Army officer who was Chiang Kai-shek's military adviser during the 1930s. After Belgium and France were occupied in 1940, he became the German military governor of occupied Belgium and northern France, a post he held until June 1944. His regime, compared to others in occupied countries, was a lenient one and he was eventually recalled because of the lack of reprisals against the Belgian resistance. He was also peripherally implicated in the July 1944 plot to kill Hitler (see Schwarze Kapelle) and he was arrested and sent to Dachau. In 1951 he was sentenced to twelve years' hard labour by a Belgian court for executing hostages and for sending Belgian Jews to Auschwitz, but was released shortly after because it was recognized that he had also shielded many Belgians from the SS.
