Eichelberger, Lt-General Robert L. (1886–1961),US Army of ficer who served under
MacArthur during the
Pacific war. His most notable contributions were at
Buna during the
New Guinea campaign, which MacArthur told him to take, ‘or not come back alive’; on
Biak Island, where he turned the battle around in five days; and during the battle for Manila in March 1945 when he was commanding the newly formed Eighth US Army in the second
Philippines campaign. Altogether he planned and executed 52
amphibious warfare landings in the
South-West Pacific Area.
