Dulles, Allen W.

Dulles, Allen W. (1893–1969),US lawyer and diplomat who was head of the Office of Strategic Services in Europe from November 1942. He operated from Berne in Switzerland and was in contact with members of the German resistance against Hitler in the Abwehr and the German foreign office. His most important coup was to use a clerk, Fritz Kolbe, to feed him copies of 1,500 German foreign office cables, which among other information, helped unmask the German agent Elyeza Bazna (see also spies). His other successes included establishing an intelligence network in southern France and being the intermediary in the negotiations for the unconditional surrender of all German forces in northern Italy (see also Wolff) before the end of the war.
