Devers, General Jacob

Devers, General Jacob (1887–1979),US Army officer whose administrative ability led to quick promotion. By May 1943 he was commanding ETOUSA with the rank of lt-general and at the end of 1943 he became Maitland Wilson's deputy supreme commander in the Mediterranean. He commanded Sixth Army Group from 15 September 1944 until the end of the war (see French Riviera landings). His mixed force of Seventh US Army under Lt-General Patch and First French Army, commanded by General de Lattre de Tassigny, drove through southern France into southern Germany, and he was promoted four-star general in March 1945. But his handling of the Colmar pocket did not enhance his reputation with Eisenhower who, in an evaluation of his field commanders, rated him only 24th.
