Dentz, General Henri-Fernand

Dentz, General Henri-Fernand (1881–1945),military governor of Paris in 1940 and, after the fall of France in June 1940, Vichy high commissioner in Syria. He led a mixed military force with considerable success during the Syrian campaign against Australian, British, and Free French forces in June– July 1941. Infringements of the armistice—Allied prisoners were evacuated from Syria after it had been signed on 14 July—led to his temporary internment. In 1945 he was condemned to death for high treason. His sentence was commuted but he died in prison.
