Dempsey, General Sir Miles

Dempsey, General Sir Miles (1896–1969),British Army officer who was a staunch supporter of Montgomery and one of his ablest commanders. He commanded the 13th Infantry Brigade, which took part in the counter-attack at Arras during the fighting which preceded the fall of France in June 1940, and then covered the Dunkirk evacuation; Eighth Army's 13th Corps during the Sicilian and Italian campaigns; and Montgomery's Second Army in north-west Europe. He was knighted in 1944.
