Déat, Marcel (1894–1955),French socialist politician who, after the German occupation of Paris, edited there the pacifist newspaper
L'Œuvre, in which he initially denounced
Pétain'sVichy government. However, he was converted to Nazi beliefs and later became a supporter of
Laval, Pétain's prime minister and arch-collaborator. In February 1944 he was appointed the Vichy government's labour minister, but he was so loathed by Pétain that he ran his ministry from Paris. He moved with the government to Sigmaringen in southern Germany and at the end of the war found refuge in an Italian monastery where he remained until his death.
