DORA (1). Codename for a Nazi concentration camp called Mittelbau KL which supplied
forced labour for the subterranean
Nordhausen factory in the Harz mountains 240 km. (150 mi.) south-west of Berlin. Its inmates, deported from all over Europe, enlarged an existing sodium sulphate mine into a huge network of tunnels and galleries where
V-weapons were constructed. The two main tunnels were nearly 3.2 km. (2 mi.) long and there were 46 other tunnels 200 m. (220 yd.) long and 9 m. (30 ft.) high. On average 100 men died every day during the construction of the factory. In all 60,000 people were deported to DORA; half died.
