Cunningham, Lt-General Sir Alan

Cunningham, Lt-General Sir Alan (1887–1983),British Army officer, younger brother of Admiral Cunningham, and from November 1940 commander of the British forces in Kenya which in 1941 helped win the East African campaign. In August 1941 he was appointed commander of the British and Commonwealth Eighth Army, newly formed to fight Rommel in the Western Desert campaigns. But following the launch of the British CRUSADER offensive in November 1941, which provoked the hard-fought Sidi Rezegh battles, he was dismissed when the C-in-C Middle East, General Auchinleck, was forced to intervene personally. He spent the rest of the war in administrative posts. He was knighted in 1941.
