Coastal Picket Patrol

Coastal Picket Patrol, formed in May 1942 as part of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. It was made up of motor boats, auxiliary yachts, and other small craft which were used for rescue work and spotting hostile submarines off the eastern seaboard and in the Gulf of Mexico. Its official Coast Guard title, Corsair Fleet, was little used, and it was generally known to its amateur and Coast Guard personnel as the ‘Hooligan Navy’. It was ineffective and was disbanded in October 1943. See also USA, 4.
