Chief of the Imperial General Staff

The Oxford Companion to World War II | 2001 | | © The Oxford Companion to World War II 2001, originally published by Oxford University Press 2001. (Hide copyright information) Copyright

Chief of the Imperial General Staff (CIGS), formal title of the head of the British Army who was also a member of the British Chiefs of Staff committee and of the Combined Chiefs of Staff. In September 1939 the CIGS was Ironside. He was succeeded in May 1940 by Dill who was replaced by Brooke in December 1941.
