Catroux, General Georges

Catroux, General Georges (1877–1969),French army officer who was governor-general of French Indo-China from August 1939 until he was replaced in June 1940 by a Vichy government nominee. He was the only army general to join de Gaulle and the Free French in 1940, and was condemned to death by Marshal Pétain for doing so. De Gaulle gave him command of the Free French forces for the Syrian campaign and he then became ‘Delegate-General and Plenipotentiary’ for the Levant. One of the original members of the French Committee for National Liberation, formed in June 1943, he was appointed governor- general of his birthplace, Algeria, the same month before being appointed the minister for French North Africa that September. In February 1945 he became French ambassador to Moscow, remaining there until 1948.
