Castelrosso (Greek: Kastellorizo),small (23 sq. km./9 sq. mi.) Italian-owned island which lies off the southern Turkish coast 130 km. (80 mi.) east of Rhodes and 240 km. (150 mi.) west of Cyprus. It was briefly occupied in February 1941 by the British No. 50 Middle East Commando (see Layforce), which withdrew after the Royal Navy failed to prevent an Italian counter-attack. When the Italians surrendered in September 1943 the British occupied the island. They remained there after the Dodecanese campaign of October– November 1943 and used it as a base for raiding operations into the Aegean. In 1947 it was ceded to Greece and is now usually recognized as being part of the Dodecanese Islands.
